Neil E. McKinnon (1924 – 2018)
It is with deepest sadness and heartfelt sorrow that Neil’s family would like to share the news of the passing of this much loved and respected Veteran on Thursday January 18, 2018.
Neil was a champion over many things. He faced adversity with inspiring dignity, quiet courage and was sustained by the love and devotion he shared for over 53 years with his beloved wife Marilyn.
He served his country overseas (ARMY) in England and Sicily, during WWII and upon returning he became a member of the Canadian Royal Legion for over 73 years.
Born and raised in Bracebridge, he found great joy in sports- playing baseball, hockey (goalie for the Bracebridge Bears), and curling. Upon moving to Barrie where he was a sales representative for Seagrams Co (25 years), he also became a member of many service clubs; A.C.T, Air Bourne and Barrie Veterans.
Neil was President of a Veteran’s Club in Barrie where he, over the span of 36 years, spearheaded a number of initiatives where donations to charities impacted the lives of many in the community, including Royal Victoria Hospital.
He will be remembered for his sense of humor, his wide-ranging interest in life and people, and his gift of speaking from the heart.
He leaves behind his loving Sons, Neil, Steven, and Rory, Niece Brenda Ross, many Grandchildren, and two great Grandchildren. Brother in-law to Bert, Sharon, Neil and Chris.
A life well lived.
A man well loved and affectionately known as the “Gaffer” to all of those who knew him.
Forever in our hearts,
his Family.

Posted on: Thursday, January 25, 2018My thoughts go out to the Family on the loss of Neil. My late husband and I always thought him as a wonderful person helping out vets in many ways.
Know that others join you in your loss. God be with you.

Posted on: Friday, January 26, 2018I worked for Neil at the ANAF for a few years in the front office many years ago. He was always full of kindness and compassion for everyone who came into the club. He also loved a good joke. My condolences to his family.

Posted on: Saturday, February 10, 2018Saddened to learn of Neil’s passing. Lots of fond memories when we lived in Barrie and were regulars at ANAF. Wayne (son of Bill and Faye) played on the old baseball team and I was a regular at the dart league and played the odd pool tourney. Loved going to ANAF for the weekend dances. Very much enjoyed watching Neil and Marilyn on the dance floor. Marilyn with her hair in that recognizable/perfect bun. Smooth steps for sure. Neil did a lot for the ANAF. ie…..Childrens Christmas parties and support of the ball team/all activities at the club.
We have friends in Torrance that remember Neil and Marilyn living on their street in Bracebridge. And the many lights they displayed during the holiday season.
All the best to Marilyn and her family.
