The family of Mary Wyn Thompson (of Barrie, ON) is sad to announce that she passed away peacefully at Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre on Saturday, January 18, 2025, at the age of 87.
Mary Wyn is survived by her daughter Heather (Ken); son Peter (Nathalie); and her treasured grandchildren: Spencer and Riley Cloughley, and Sebastien Thompson.
Born in Banff, Alberta, Mary Wyn was the eldest daughter of the late Richard and Margaret (Cameron) Lea. She is survived by her brother Rick Lea (Regan) and her sister Dixie Lively (Dale…her beloved, late brother-in-law). She was also pre-deceased by her precious grandson, Jackson Cloughley (2003).
Sadly, Mary Wyn was pre-deceased in December 2021 by Larry, her loving husband of almost 53 years.
Growing up ‘on the Miramichi’ (in Chatham, New Brunswick), she attended St. Michael’s Academy, graduated from St. Thomas University in Fredericton, and then moved to Ontario where she trained in Hamilton to be a Medical Lab Technician…a job she thoroughly enjoyed.
Mary Wyn met Larry in Toronto in 1968, and they were married the following year. Barrie became their home for the next five decades—a place where they raised their children and created countless memories.
Mary Wyn has kept in close touch with family and many friends over the years…from her neighbourhood pals and school chums, to work colleagues, and later from groups such as her Beta Sigma Phi sorority sisters and the “stitching ladies” of the Simcoe County Embroidery Guild. She was known for her warmth, her dedication to her family, and her ability to weave entertaining stories…and maybe tell a dirty joke or two on occasion! She had a great sense of humour!
Mary Wyn lived a long, happy life full of love and no regrets. She will be loved, cherished and well missed, and remembered with admiration by all who knew her.
The family would like to sincerely thank the staff and residents of The Barrieview retirement home, where Mary Wyn lived for the past 5 years, for their support, compassion and friendship during this difficult time.
In keeping with Mary Wyn’s wishes, there will be no funeral service. Cremation has taken place and an inurnment will be planned in early Summer at the St. James United Church Cemetery, Stroud, for family and friends to gather together to celebrate her life.

Posted on: Monday, February 10, 2025My sincere condolences to the family of Mary Wyn (Ming); she was my former sister-in-law and I cared for her deeply. She was very thoughtful and I could count on receiving a Christmas Card & Birthday Card from her every year. She was artistic & I have a couple of pieces of her artwork, which I truly admire.

Posted on: Monday, February 10, 2025We were saddened to hear of Ming’s passing in January. Ming and I were sorority “sisters” for many years and I have many small hand made treasurers given to me by her over the years. Each one is a special reminder of her various talents. Later, we were fortunate enough to become neighbours and spent many a sunny day chatting in her beautiful back yard. Her sense of humour and interesting stories of her past could always make us smile. We will treasure those memories.

Posted on: Wednesday, February 12, 2025My sincere condolences to Mary Wyn’s family. I met Mary Wyn when my mother, Virginia McCabe, lived at The Barrieview. She was a wonderful friend. Mom really admired her needlepoint and I remember Mary Wyn giving her a beautiful book mark she had made. Such a lovely lady.

Posted on: Wednesday, February 12, 2025My sincere condolences to Mary Wyn’s family on the sad news of her passing. Ming and I were lifelong friends from when we first met at St Michael’s Academy in grade 7 in Chatham, NB. We stayed in touch over the decades, often sharing our reminiscences, news and laughs over long phone calls and letters. She was like a sister to me and I valued her friendship tremendously. Ming was indeed a fine artist, and over the years, would often brighten my day with a hand painted card in the mail. She was particularly admired by our family for her water colour paintings of birch trees, which are now dotted around our homes. I have very fond memories of our school days together and treasure our enduring friendship always.
