Joan Doreen Robertson, 10 days before her 95th birthday, succumbed to cancer at IOOF Seniors Home in Barrie on April 14, 2025.
She was born on April 24, 1930 in Barrie, to Ernest and Elizabeth Robertson.
Joan has led an independent, hard-working life since she was 15. She trained as a hairdresser, worked for General Electric controlling a balance machine and successfully broke the glass ceiling in several male dominated careers such as shipping and receiving in the manufacturing warehouses of Moldex and Sears, and claims manager and estimator for M.J. Campbell’s Moving and Storage.
Her family grew up in economically challenging times, but music was always a large part of her personal enjoyment through singing and dancing. Joan had an incredible memory, and she could recall songs from the early days and amused those who visited and cared for her, with maxims and adages from the days gone by. She was always an integral part of our Robertson and Mallory families, attending many special occasions and could recite the birthdates of each member of the family.
Joan laments that she never had children. However, she had a big heart and had lots of love to give. She has been known as “Aunt Joan” and mentor to not only many nieces and nephews but children she babysat. She also has been a “mother” to many furry feline friends who more times than not, chose her to live with.
Joan is survived by her sister, Irma Abram and brother-in-law Peter Abram. She was preceded in death by her sister Vona Mallory, and brothers, Gord, Bruce, and Vern Roberson.
There will be only a small, private interment but Joan shall be remembered as bringing light into our lives and she will continue to be carried in our hearts.
