It is with immense sadness to announce the passing of James John Burns on the evening of December 15th 2018, at age 69, with his wife and family close by. Cherished and beloved husband for 45 years to Maria (nee Shearstone). Adored father to Nadine (Ryan), Michael (Christy), Phillip (Katie), Colleen (Ian), Jamie, Matthew (Luke), and Diane (Nicholas). Whole heartedly missed grandfather of Andrea, Ruby, Ben, Luke, Nathan, Mara, Lucie, Sophia, Isabella, and Mazie. Reunited with his father James John. Survived by his mother Stella (nee Hickey). Loving and strong brother to Anne, Patricia, Margaret, Theresa, John, Frances, Mary, Kenneth, Thomas, Joseph, and Gerrard.
Jim’s wife and family were his greatest motivators and number one concern. The impact he had on each and every one of his family members and friends will forever be felt and never forgotten. It is in this time of extreme grief that we appreciate the amount of humor that Jim brought into all of our lives. Though tears are flowing, they are cradled in laughter and the fondest of memories.
Jim had a true passion for his trade as a Tool and Die Maker which led to him achieving multiple managerial positions during his 30-year career at Magna International. In more recent years, Jim proudly started two family businesses, Burns & Sons Tooling and Burns Bath Restorations, and had been enjoying working with his son Phillip at Western Mechanical.
Jim enjoyed golfing, puttering in the garage, hour long phone conversations, vacuuming the pool, and keeping the Beer Store and Sobey’s in business. He left his mark on anyone who crossed his path and he had a knack for making even the crabbiest store teller smile. He loved nothing more than a good laugh with his loved ones, but he laughed the hardest at his old tired jokes and one-liners.
In the end, we’re still wondering what the answer is to his age-old question: Why was he so good looking?
The family will be celebrating Jim’s life on Saturday, January 5th, 2019 at South Innisfil Community Centre (Lefory Arena) 1354 Killarney Beach Road, Innisfil, ON L0L 1W0, and will be accepting guests between 1-5 pm.
In lieu of flowers the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Barrie Food Bank www.barriefoodbank.org/donating or the Mental Health Association https://ontario.cmha.ca/get-involved/donate/in-memoriam-and-in-tribute-donations/

Posted on: Tuesday, December 18, 2018I was deeply saddened to hear of Jim’s passing, and will forever mourn his loss.
To me, Jim was the quick-witted father of one of my best friends. He enriched my life and all those around him through his (hilarious and rarely appropriate) humour, his thoughtful kindness, and his genuine welcoming and easy going nature. He created the kind of home environment that my friends and I would visit even without Diane’s presence, we loved being around Jim and Maria so much.
To the Burns Family, my thoughts and heart are with you at this terrible time.

Posted on: Tuesday, December 18, 2018I had the opportunity to first meet Jim forty six years ago while dating his sister Francie
A year later we were both in his wedding to Maria. A month after that Francie and I were married and Jim
gave me the gears claiming we had two rehearsals and he had only one. That was Jim’s humour.
To the family, we will see you at the celebration of Jim’s life and speak to you individually but wanted to say
this in this forum.
Jim, we will miss you like crazy, you were a rough and grouse man on the outside sometimes but inside was a
heart of gold. We like to say a nugget. Pure gold.
What you did for Francie in her stay in the transplant hospital will never be forgotten. All the calls you made
since to her every Monday night was just another example of the brother you were.
God speed Jim. Was proud to have known you all those years.

Posted on: Tuesday, December 18, 2018I’m still in shock over this.
I cannot believe it.
He was one of a kind.
Probably one of my most favorite uncle’s.
I will never forget his humour.
I visited him a few days after his surgery and was under the impression he was going to be fine.
He was joking around as he always did and had a positive outlook on his rehabilitation.
He was a good uncle and great dad.
He will always be in my heart and will be missed by all of us.
Say hi to gramps Uncle Jim and rest in peace.
With a heavy heart

Posted on: Tuesday, December 18, 2018Where do I start? Well I can start with this…Gym and all the Burnses have been like a second family to me and neighbors for over 30 years, Gym made us laugh (a lot), cry, run, and hide at times growing up lol! I don’t think I will ever come across a character quite like him again in my lifetime. He raised 7 amazing kids that I love dearly and a wife that the whole street (Nantyr) looked up to like a second mom! From the pool parties to the street parties to the Christmas parties and everything in between we all loved him! Gym and Maria stepped up to support my father and mother this past winter during my dads battle with cancer and gave one hell of a speech at my dads celebration of life this spring that I will never forget! Gym I love you! You will definitely be missed but definitely never forgotten! Cheers up in the sky and I’m sure you and my dad are having a cold one together! RIP my friend!

Posted on: Saturday, December 22, 2018My deepest sympathies in your time of grief. I worked with Jim at Autosystems and he always knew how to make me laugh, with his continual spilling of coffee on my filing cabinet on purpose so I could give him trouble. He was a great man and was always kind to me. I enjoyed his emails that he would send me with pics of his grandkids and the occasional joke too. He will be sadly missed!

Posted on: Wednesday, January 2, 2019To the Burns family sad to say only a few of you I know. I had the chance to meet my cousin Jim on 1 occasion while in Adelaide (Australia) just those few hours at Gerards place Jim left his mark and that is not surprising in reading all the wonderful comments of other people. It is with deepest Sympathy I send this message to you all and to my Aunty Stella

Posted on: Friday, January 4, 2019To Maria and the Burns family, our condolences are extended to all.
We will always remember Jim’s visit to Adelaide Aust.
We had a family get together and BBQ where Jim’s jokes and humour were funny and enjoyed by all the McCuish family.
The many email jokes Jim sent were always funny and enjoyed, even the Aussie jokes.
I will miss him.

Posted on: Saturday, January 5, 2019I have known Jim since we started working together at Magna in 1994. He was passionate about his family, his trade and the people and business of his company. He was loyal and hard working and loved nothing more than to chat about how to make everything better after work over a beverage. Jim was one of the good ones…..we will miss his sense of humour and his love of life
