Posted on: Tuesday, January 7, 2025Jim’s baking was legendary for many of our family celebrations–his incredible White Chocolate Ganache-filled cake was the eagerly-anticipated ending to many family birthdays and anniversaries . To be greeted by his warm hellos and the wonderful aromas at Parkside Variety nourished body and soul. Sincere condolences to Christine and all the grieving hearts he has left behind. Posted on: Tuesday, January 7, 2025I was shocked to read about Jim’s passing. Such a great guy and my memories go way back to playing noon-hour floor hockey with and against him at the Barrie YMCA and then to seeing him at the store on Parkside.
Regards to Harv and Lynn.

Posted on: Tuesday, January 7, 2025So sorry to hear of Jim’s passing. I have many fond memories working with him at the Wick. His quick wit, smile and dry humour made many a stressful service more fun. Thinking of you all.

Posted on: Wednesday, January 8, 2025Thank you for the opportunity to write a few words.
Jim began with us at Chateau Whistler as one of our apprenticeship team. He quickly became the go to guy amongst his peers. I will choose to remember Jim as a hard working, loyal team member who assisted us on many events and catering. My favourite memory is on one of those catered events up on a glacier and at the end of the event he jumped into the lake which had barely broken ice!! Not a long swim, but he did it.
It is very sad that he left us at such a young age. I am glad that we are able to have dinner with him in Kelowna this past fall.
My sincerest, heart felt condolences to you Christine and your family.
Till we meet again Jim, and perhaps cook together once more. Rest in peace!

Posted on: Wednesday, January 8, 2025So sad to hear about Jim. We live around the corner from the Parkside Market. Jim was our go-to chef for special occasions or a much-needed treat. Best scalloped potatoes ever! Many times I have asked Jim for last-minute help with food for work meetings or social gatherings. When I’d ask, “Jim, can you make something for ten people for tomorrow and can I pick it up by noon”, he would say with a smile, “Heated up and ready to go?” He was a gem, and we will miss him. Posted on: Wednesday, January 8, 2025Jim was with us for 10 years when he first opened the restaurant known as “Garraway’s Bistro” located at 31 Maple Avenue and then expanded to 37 Dunlop Street, West, Barrie, Ontario. Jim will be remembered as a “GREAT CHEF”, well-liked, very friendly and always smiling and therefore he had a very successful business.
We enjoyed having Jim with us for ten years and are deeply saddened to hear of his passing, much too young.
“He will always be remembered as a true gentleman with great integrity”.
Our sincere, heart felt condolences to his entire family. “May Jim Rest in Peace”.

He and you fought the good fight over the past couple of years and you both were inspiring on how you handled all the adversity with such grace and dignity.
From now on, whenever i watch a blue jays game i will think of him and his passion for the team. Us going to the Jays game this year will always be a wonderful memory.
Our hearts go out to you and your families. Rest in Peace Jim

Posted on: Thursday, January 9, 2025No words can truly capture the depth of sadness we feel hearing of Jim’s passing. Jim was such an affable man, always bringing warmth and kindness to every interaction.
The purchase of a Shepard’s pie or Lasagna, came with conversations about life and some times
Real Estate that were always engaging and comforting. My last chat with Jim stood out, as even in the face of his own health challenges, he remained open, kind, and always concerned for others—still taking the time to ask if I was doing okay.
He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. The world needs more people like Jim, not fewer.

Posted on: Saturday, January 11, 2025My friendship with Jim was not a lifelong friendship, It wasn’t a friendship that developed over time, it wasn’t one we spoke often about and it wasn’t a friendship that we felt needed a label. We commonly referred to each other as simply “friend”. Our conversations, whether in person or other, started as “hi friend”.
Inside that “friend” was a mutual connection to someone that felt timeless. It may have been while the two of us stood silently watching over the bonfire or at times it could have been when I popped into the store to say hi. Time slipped away with Jim and I loved him for that.
Love you friend, see you soon.

Posted on: Monday, January 13, 2025I was so sad to see this just now. Lynn, my heart goes out to you & the family on yet another loss. My husband Gary & I were huge fans of Jim’s abilities as a chef. When Gary was ill and near the end of his life, the one thing he requested, repeatedly, was a pulled pork sandwich from Jim’s shop on Parkside. Jim was always so friendly to us and never fully realized what a rock star he was in the culinary world.
