Funeral Details: Celebration of Life to be held at a later date

On August 7, 2021, Geraldine “Gerry” Metcalfe (nee McLean) passed away peacefully in her 92nd year after a long illness at her residence in Barrie, Ontario. Born in Toronto, the only child of the late Dorothy McLean. Predeceased by her uncles Cy McLean, Reginald McLean, Fred Harwood and her cousin Kathleen Cadogan. Will be sadly missed by her husband of 64 years, Ralph Metcalfe. Gerry was a wonderful mother to daughters Linda Flenniken (Dennis), Lisa Johnson (Eddie) and Laura Goodman (Terence). Loving grandmother to Ashley (Joshua), Rachel (Ryan), Lauren (Russell), Jonathan (Olivia), Shay, Kori and Gabrielle. Great-grandmother to Hailey, Kylie and Isla. Will be missed by her cousin Evelyn Wilson and by Catherine Goodman.

She had many accomplishments during her 39 years with Environment Canada. Everyone fortunate to have met Gerry knew she was a bundle of sheer joy, positivity, encouragement and kindness. She had a fabulously quick wit, great sense of humour and a natural gentleness that will be greatly missed.

A special thank you to the staff at the Barrieview Retirement Community whose professional and compassionate care helped her through her journey over the last year.

A private family service to be held August 11, 2021 and a celebration of life will be held at a later date. Donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society https://alzheimer.ca/en

Simone and I send so much love to the Metcalfe family. Mrs. Metcalfe was such a wonderful role model for motherhood. She gained quite a few of us “bonus” daughters who looked at her as our mother too. Her beautiful spirit and legacy lives on and we will always remember her with love and laughter. An amazing woman and an amazing life well well lived!

I was deeply saddened to hear that Gerry is no longer with us. She had a sparkling personality and was so much fun to be around. I will never forget the fun we had embarrassing our kids when we attended Gabby’s dance recitals. We either talked too much or cheered too loudly and seem to open the packets of lifesavers she always had on hand at the most inappropriate moment. I will always treasure my memories of her. She will be missed.
