Donald James Halkes, affectionately known as Don or Donnie, passed away peacefully on March 28th at the Simcoe Hospice after a long and fulfilling life filled with love, laughter, and unforgettable memories. He was 87 years old.
Born on October 30, 1937, in Toronto, ON, Don grew up with a zest for life and a heart full of generosity. He often reflected fondly on the "golden years" when his children were young, beginning many of his cherished stories with "back on Weston Road..." He was a devoted and present father who, alongside his late wife Hazel, created a home filled with love, adventure, and joy in Alcona beach. Don and Hazel were a dynamic duo, always planning fun outings and adventures for their children. From day trips to Fantasy Island, Crystal Beach, and Wasaga to never missing the CNE, they built a lifetime of treasured memories together. He looked forward to his annual Myrtle Beach trip each spring and enjoyed a green beer at the St. Patricks day parade. Known for his loving and giving nature, Don was the embodiment of generosity. He ensured every Christmas was magical, with presents not only from him and Hazel but also from Santa. His treat drawer was always stocked, much to the delight of his grandchildren.
Don was also a larger-than-life character, earning the nickname "Hurricane," which followed him throughout his life. A natural comedian and chatterbox, he had a knack for striking up conversations with anyone he met, whether it was about the weather or the latest performance of his beloved Toronto Maple Leafs. To know Don was to love him—his heart of gold and infectious personality left an indelible mark on everyone he encountered.
Don’s legacy lives on in the beautiful family he created. He is survived by his loving children, Dawn (Steve), Lori-Ann (Brad), Tracey (Claudio), Stephen, and David. He cherished his role as Grandpa, spoiling his grandchildren Madison, Carson, Lauren, Brittany (Scott), Anthony, Katie, and Brandon, and recently welcoming his great-granddaughter, Aria, into the family.
The family would like to extend a special and heartfelt thank you to the Schnier family, who cared for Don, day and night for years. Their unwavering devotion, love, and support meant the world to Don and his family, and their kindness will never be forgotten.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to Simcoe Hospice, whose compassionate care brought comfort to Don and his family during his final moments.
Don will be deeply missed but forever remembered for his warmth, humor, and boundless love.
His memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. May he rest in peace.
