Hugh Donald Borthwick

August 22, 1935 - January 1, 2025

Funeral Details: A celebration of Don’s life will be held in the spring.

Hugh Donald “Don" Borthwick passed away peacefully in hospice care, surrounded by his family. He leaves behind Mary, his devoted wife of more than 50 years; his brother George “Bud”; his children Tim (Sarah), Judy, Paul (Erin), Lindsay (Mathieu), and Mark (Stephanie); and his beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Tate, Lucy, Jennifer, Lincoln, Grayson, Thomas, Calla, Duncan, Grant, Maleah, and Jovian. He was predeceased by his parents, Hugh T. and Mabel Borthwick.

Don was born and raised in Toronto, a city he loved and called home for most of his life. A proud graduate of the University of Toronto Schools (UTS) and Victoria College at the University of Toronto, Don was an accomplished student-athlete, playing hockey and football, and he carried a lifelong passion for sports, particularly golf.

Above all, Don was a family man. Whether building a backyard rink, coaching hockey, or teaching his children to golf or simply enjoy life, his love and energy were always evident. Family dinners—especially during holidays—were cherished opportunities for him to bring everyone together and connect, just as he treasured time spent at the family cottage on Big Bay Point, Lake Simcoe and winters in Bonita Springs, Florida.

Don was equally dedicated to his community. He volunteered for organizations including the Humber Valley Hockey Association, the Etobicoke Olympium, and the CNIB, where he served on the board following the loss of an eye in an accident.

Don’s career in advertising saw him rise to senior executive roles, where his leadership left an indelible mark. Later, he embarked on a second career at UTS, where he led a transformative fundraising campaign and the UTS Alumni Association. Alongside his professional contributions, he remained an active volunteer at the school for more than 60 years. His enduring commitment to UTS was recognized with the Crawford Award and the establishment of the H. Donald Borthwick Student Activity Fund.

A person of boundless energy, kindness, and optimism, Don was known for his easy smile and natural ease with people. He cherished his friendships, many of which spanned decades. A natural leader, Don had an effortless ability to inspire and guide others, whether at work, in his volunteer roles, or among family and friends. He was a steadfast presence in the lives of those around him, always ready to share a laugh, lend a listening ear, or engage in a bit of friendly competition.

Don’s life was a testament to generosity, dedication, and love, leaving behind a legacy of kindness and community that will continue to inspire those who knew him.

Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Don’s life will be held in the spring. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the UTS Class of 1954 Bursary Fund or the Canadian Cancer Society.

Knowing Don at UTS, playing hockey and in the advertising world, he always was the definition of class – first class.

My deepest condolences to the family on Don’s passing. I had the wonderful privilege of working with him for many years at UTS on its campaign and with the UTS Alumni Association. He was actually a classmate of my father, Jack Ellis Class of ’54, so we had that connection too. I appreciated his deep passion for making a difference in the UTS community. I will always remember his sage advice, wealth of knowledge about all matters, and his wonderful sense of humour and spirit. He was a very special man indeed.
