Frances Mary Smith

Frances Mary Smith, the matriarch of our family, died peacefully in her sleep after a brief and brave battle with cancer at Royal Victoria Hospital Barrie, on Friday August 17,2018. at the age of 87.

 

 

Fran (Caldwell) Smith was born in Toronto on July 23rd, 1931 to William and Frances (Giles) Caldwell and sister to Sam Caldwell.

 

Fran was introduced to Ted (Edward) Smith in 1947 and later married on Sept 23rd, 1950. They had 38 wonderful loving years together until Ted passed in March 1989.

 

Fran grew up in Toronto finishing her education at Northern Secondary before becoming a successful Executive Secretary to the president of Dominion Readers Service. Fran was an avid Bridge player, and a fan of professional tennis.

Fran obtained her drivers licence later in life and would often critique someone’s driving while they were driving. A favourite line of Ted’s to Fran was pilot to co-pilot S#*# *#!

 

Fran’s brother Sam predeceased her in 2007 and although his daughter Joyce was on the other side of the world (Australia) they corresponded regularly. Fortunately, Joyce was able to visit Aunt Fran last year on her 86th birthday.

 

Fran resided for 16 years at the IOOF Heritage Place and will be missed by her many friends and neighbours.

 

Fran is survived by her Daughter Karen Trollope (Smith), Daughter in law Karen Smith, Grandchildren Ryan (Renee Trollope) and Amber Trollope, Grant Smith, Great Grandchildren Leah and Bryce Trollope and former Son in law Ross Trollope.

 

Beloved mother of the Late David Smith and Grandmother of the late Kerrilyn Smith.

 

Predeceased by her companions Bud Cheney and Wallace Gough.

 

The family would like to extend their thanks to Dr. Christine Stewart, Nurse Practioner

Heather Taylor and the wonderful staff in the Respiratory care wing at RVH.

 

At the request of Fran there will be no funeral, any tributes can be donated to Royal Victoria hospital in her memory.
